Murray School District's Prevention Programs
Prevention Dimensions (PD):
Educators are trained in curriculum sponsored by the State Office of Education on-site at their school or through attending training through a tri-district collaborative model with surrounding school districts. Trainings empower teachers to more effectively teach substance abuse prevention in the classroom. Risk factors are assessed and decreased by promoting protective factors that decrease problem behaviors such as: substance abuse, delinquency, teen pregnancy, school dropout and violence. This strength-based curriculum highlights skills and develops student assets to promote healthy life-long decision making. |
Cornerstone Counseling--Life Skills Training, Sixth Sense, Living Skills & VOICES Programs:
These programs are implemented in all the Murray schools in conjunction with Cornerstone Counseling Center and the Salt Lake Division of Substance Abuse Services. Cornerstone offers specialized student support by providing classroom lessons and skill building groups. Evidence-based curriculum is implemented to promote student success. |
First Offenders:
The First Offenders program is beneficial in assisting youth to understand the Utah Laws and the ramifications of unlawful behavior associated with these types of choices. A wide range of offenses fall into the category of a Class B Misdemeanor along with Safe Schools Violations. The goals of the program are to address specific risk factors and promote protective factors and skills to assist students in making healthy decisions. The child and parent attend four two-hour sessions and complete assignments together. |
Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE):
DARE provides classroom lessons for children in grades K-4th and more intensive lessons in grades 5th and 7th. The content focuses on a ten-week curriculum based on increasing skills of the DARE Decision Making Model through active participation and lesson completion. Murray police officers, students, parents, teachers and community members work together to increase awareness of the harmful effects of substance abuse. |
School Success Class:
The class curriculum is evidence-based and focuses on helping students be more successful in school by learning essential skills such as: organization & time management, healthy routines, problem-solving, note taking, test preparation, goal setting and action steps toward achievement, weekly attendance & work completion tracking, assertive communication, etc. The class size is small (20), so students receive more individualized attention. This class is offered at the junior highs and high school. |
In-School Suspension:
The In-School Suspension program is a disciplinary alternative to out-of-school suspension for less serious disciplinary infractions that do not pose an imminent threat or danger to other persons. Several risk factors are addressed and protective factors fostered through implementing Prevention Dimensions lessons. All schools that have been funded have helped students to better understand their previous decisions and learn new pro-social coping skills. |
School Social Work Services:
Students at the secondary schools can meet with a social worker to address barriers that may be impacting their success at school. Social workers provide one-on-one intervention, group work, classroom presentations, outreach to families, and referrals to community agencies. |
Student Leadership for Diversity:
This is a specialized training for students at the high school sponsored by the Murray School District, the State Office of Education and the National Conference for Community & Justice (NCCJ). Students learn about equity issues and ways to promote social justice at school and in their community. |
