Cornerstone Counseling Center, a private nonprofit human service agency, was established in 1968 and was among the first formal substance abuse programs in Utah. The Center has developed an extensive and integrated continuum of substance abuse and domestic violence treatment and prevention programs. The Center's parallel emphasis on treatment and prevention, as well as the diversity of populations served, provides a broad perspective and comprehensive knowledge base for understanding and intervening effectively in substance abuse and domestic violence problems. |

The following projects represent a continuum of drug and violence prevention services offered to students as they progress from elementary through junior high school. Programs are based on a thorough research of current literature. Prevention interventions are provided which address developmental, environmental, and social factors appropriate for each age level and are carefully evaluated to assess their effectiveness. |

SIXTH SENSE
is a support group that meets monthly to address issues these families are facing and to provide emotional support, psychological support and to provide referrals to community resources. Family activities also occur monthly as part of this program. |

VOICES
Targeted girls and boys participate in ten-session, gender specific groups focused on building skills to deal with the special needs and concerns that adolescents face at this pivotal time in their lives. The groups provide youth with the opportunity to raise questions, voice their concerns and develop strategies and skills to deal with these concerns. The groups are designed to build connections with peers in a positive and supportive environment. |

LIVING SKILLS
Targeted students in 2nd/3rd and 4th/5th grades are invited to attend a weekly group that teaches life skills with a focus on getting along better with others and providing a more positive school experience. Parents and teachers are invited to reinforce the skills the students have learned. CSAP Exemplary Substance Abuse Award, 1999 and cited as one of 20 most effective programs by U.S. Dept. of Education. |

FAMILIES PLUS
Targeted students in first through fifth grade, who attend after-school programs, are invited to participate in Making Choices skills groups. The group focuses on building decision-making skills and positive social relationships. Selected families are provided with in-home family support and parent training. |

LIFE SKILLS TRAINING
Classroom-based prevention program for 6th, 7th, 8th graders. A proven effective program teaching students personal and social skills in order to promote individual competence. LST shows a reduction in substance use up to 87 percent. CSAP Model Program |
